The timer starts when you make your first move.
The orange squares are basically green, except they indicate the direction that leads to the goal... so when you're frantically pressing the keys the orange squares can be a lifesaver.
Note that in 3D rectangular Labby there are 25 spaces you can get to in at most 2 steps, but in Hexlabby there are only 19. In one step though you get to 6 in either case. The growth rate of a ball of radius n is cubic for 3D rectangular Labby and quadratic for 2D Hexlabby. Hexlabby seems most interesting with around 40% of the tiles being red.
